ACROSS TANZANIA EXPEDITIONS Zanzibar, known in Swahili as UNGUJA, once renowned by explorers such as Stanley and Livingstone for its fascinating history, romantic stories of kings and princesses, racial mix, peace and tranquillity, is a paradise for those whishing to escape from the stress of the Western world. It is a heaven for those who love swimming, water sports and game fishing, as both islands are endowed with silver and beaches, coral reefs and virgin marine life. As for history, culture, and art, Zanzibar is the meeting point of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The Old Stone Town, with its fascinating architecture, was declared by UNESCO a ‘World Heritage Site’ in the year 2000. To the eco-tourist, one has the opportunity to visit the spice plantations, swim with dolphins, and tour the unique Jozani Forest Reserve to see the rare Red Colobus monkeys. Just the name Zanzibar, evokes dreams of romance and mastery and the reality will not disappoint the traveler bored with mass tourism and seeking an enlightening and enjoyable holiday experience.
